Area of Research Interest
Julio Leonel Perez Vega, Ph.D. Candidate
My research is dedicated to exploring the intersection of positive psychology, human development, and spiritual wisdom—particularly as they impact the flourishing of Latino men and underserved communities. As a Ph.D. candidate in Developmental Psychology, my work is grounded in empirical research while remaining deeply informed by lived experience, cultural identity, and a commitment to social responsibility.
Core Research Themes
-
Positive Psychology & Human Flourishing:
Investigating how cultivating positive emotions—such as gratitude, hope, and compassion—can foster resilience, cognitive growth, and well-being across the lifespan. My work seeks to identify evidence-based strategies that empower individuals to overcome adversity and achieve personal transformation. -
Spiritual Integration & Meaning-Making:
Integrating spiritual teachings—especially from biblical sources like the Gospels of Thomas and John, as well as gnostic and Masonic wisdom—with psychological science to develop practical approaches for emotion regulation, purpose discovery, and identity formation. I am particularly interested in how non-dogmatic spirituality can support mental health and holistic development. -
Neurodiversity & Learning Differences:
Exploring the lived experience of Latino men with ADHD, autism, and other neurodevelopmental conditions. My research aims to reduce stigma, promote early diagnosis, and design culturally relevant interventions that support academic, social, and professional success. -
Resilience in the Face of Adversity:
Examining the impact of trauma, poverty, migration, and systemic barriers on Latino men’s development. I focus on identifying protective factors, community resources, and personal strengths that enable individuals to thrive despite significant challenges. -
Identity, Masculinity, and Social Responsibility:
Studying how cultural, familial, and societal expectations shape the identity and well-being of Latino men. My research highlights the importance of redefining masculinity, fostering self-acceptance, and encouraging social responsibility as pathways to personal and collective flourishing.
Research Methods
-
Mixed-methods approaches, including qualitative interviews, narrative analysis, and quantitative surveys
-
Community-based participatory research with Latino men and their families
-
Intervention design and program evaluation for coaching, counseling, and educational initiatives
Research Purpose
My ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and real-world application—offering insights and tools that help individuals and communities not only overcome obstacles, but also realize their highest potential. By honoring both empirical evidence and spiritual wisdom, my research aspires to create more inclusive, compassionate, and resilient societies.
